The Early Christian Martyrs

On the day of their death, Perpetua entered the arena bravely and passing beneath the emperor's seat, she cried out to him, "You may judge us now, but God will judge you later!" (18). Perpetua was soon given over to a wild cow and when its efforts were thwarted she was beheaded.
Conclusion
Somehow the suffering of Christians spurred others to more faithful living. "Converts were won over by the deportment of the Christians and by the bravery of their martyrs" (Bainton 19). The apostle Paul noted that "most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear" (Phil. 1:14). These Saints who have suffered are among the most noble of the Christian faith. While their fates where terrible it is the way in which they approached it that is admirable. The examples listed above are of well known accounts yet there are countless others, both leaders and lay people, men and women, elderly and the young who approached their destiny with temperance and courage. One fact is certain, to which history bears witness is that that during times of terrible persecutions the church grows at its quickest pace.
