The Advantages of Communism in Eastern Europe

Diplomatic immunity is supposed to protect foreign officials from the vagaries of laws in countries where they are not nationals. But the skinheads, who stalk the streets of Bratislava, Slovakia's capital, have created their own menacing concept: diplomatic vulnerability. Being a foreign diplomat, or a foreign anything increases the chances of getting attacked. Last summer, a Chinese diplomat was badly beaten by a gang. A few weeks later, Libyan diplomats complained that their sons had been attacked by skinheads. (A11).
In conclusion, the fall of the communist regime in Eastern Europe had profound negative effects on those living in Eastern Europe, increased crime rates, poverty levels, and civil-rights violations where the growing pains endured by those fledgling democracies. Under the communist party's authoritative rule Eastern Europe enjoyed low crime rates, low poverty levels, and equality among classes. So was the choice to exit communism and enter democracy in Eastern Europe's best interest? Only time will tell.
