The main field of this text is miscommunication between two different people. It is clearly visible in the dialogue between the two characters especially when Miss Shuttleworth drifts off and unintentionally ignores Mr Adamson’s question:
-‘What an extraordinary, amazing, astonishing thing. The tits have gone for the Gentleman’s Relish. They’ve never ever done that before.’ after which Mr Adamson also responds with:
-‘I’m sorry, madam. What did you say?’
To conclude all the above mentioned, the story shows a case of miscommunication and misunderstanding between two people that are completely different. On the one hand, there is Mr. Adamson, who is serious and determined to complete the survey and on the other hand, there is Miss Shuttleworth who is quite ‘spacey’ and easily distracted. And the whole story centers around these two different characters and the communication between them and how they teach each other something through communicating with each other. The story is rich with various stylistic devices – linguistic (epithets, similes), grammatical (rhetorical questions), lexical (aposiopesis, repetition) which all help to make the story more colourful and rich.
