William Makepeace Thackeray was born on July 18, 1811 in Calcutta, India to Richmond Thackeray and Anne Becher Thackeray. Thackeray was sent to school in England in 1817 two years after his father died. Soon after Thackeray had left, his mother and her new husband joined him in England.
In school Thackeray spent most of his time reading novels and sketching, hobbies that stayed with him through out his life. He later attended Cambridge where he never took a degree in anything. He had many gambling debts to pay and no money to pay them. His mother and his stepfa…
