After World War II the Federal government continued to affect the welfare and economic conditions of America's workforce. Average hourly earnings more than doubled, even though hours worked per week declined. Congress then passed the Employment act in 1946, which committed the government to take all measures to promote employment, production, and purchasing power. In 1949 child labor was prohibited. In postwar, consumer goods which were not available during the war became in big demand. People who worked during the war and at overtime rates had more money to spend.
