The Metaphysical poets were a group of British poets of the 17th century, who had similar interests and ideas. The term "Metaphysical poets" was first used by Samuel Johnson, who said that "the Metaphysical poets were men of learning." The most famous representatives of Metaphysical literature are John Donne, George Herbert, Andrew Marvell, Saint Robert Southwell, Thomas Traherne, Henry Vaughan and George Chapman. Also, some other poets are considered as Metaphysical poets. For example, Thomas Carew, Abraham Cowley, Richard Crashaw, Edward Herbert, Richard Leigh, Richard Lovelace, Katherine Philips, Sir John Suckling and Edward Taylor in some some sources are considered as Metaphysical poets. However, one of the greatest Metaphysical poets is considered to be John Donne. Metaphysical poetry is famous for its realistic and sensual style, for its rich language and original Metaphors. Often poems are presented in the form of an argument. Metaphysical poetry is connected with the whole experience of man. Very often, the poems are about love, romantic and feelings. Man's relationship with God is another important characteristic mark. Integral part of these poems is wordplay and rhyming. However, in 17th century many representatives of Metaphysical poetry write about the problems in the society. It was the time when King Charles I was executed and the Civil War started. It changed the form of government and excluded kingship for almost twenty years.
As I mentioned before, John Donne is considered as one of the brightest Metaphysical poets. He was against 16th century Elizabethan love poetry. Donne used colloquial speech in his poems, breaking the traditions and ws very good known by his eloquence. Some consider that in his poetry dominates male ownership of woman, which was characteristic of that time.
