Romeo's friends, Benvolio and Mercutio, were walking through the streets of Verona, when they were met by a party of the Capulets with the impetuous Tybalt at their head. This was the same angry Tybalt would have fought with Romeo at Lord Capulet's house. Romeo wished to avoid a quarrel with Tybalt above all men, because he was the kinsman of Juliet. Romeo had never thoroughly entered into the family quarrel, because of his nature being gentle. So he tried to reason with Tybalt whom he saluted mildly by the name of good Capulet.
