.” Hamlet has lost his faith in women, he thinks that they are lustful creatures that care only about themselves and have no sincere feelings for others and therefore he tells Ophelia to go to nunnery and wants to forbid marriages as they are not based on true love and only ruin people’s life. However, this is not the case of Ophelia, who is truly in love in Hamlet and therefore his speech wounds her deeply.
Gertrude is an important character in the play as her marrying late king Hamlet’s brother Claudius is one of the initial reasons for Hamlet’s madness; therefore, it is connected with all the succeeding events of the play. Gertrude is selfish and clueless mother as she does not see her actions as immoral and betraying her family and cannot understand his son’s discontent with her marriage. At the same time, she is not evil, she does not commit all these mistakes to hurt anyone, she commits them because she does not understand that what she is doing is wrong.
