Erich Maria Remarque was born on June 22, 1898 in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony (Germany). His father was a bookbinder, and his family was of the Middle Class. He studied at the University of Munster, but was recruited into the German army at the age of 18. He fought on the Western front and was wounded 5 times, the last being severe. After the war he became a teacher, and sometimes worked as a sportswriter and racing-car driver.
