According to National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (Online 1) „Language is the expression of human communication through which knowledge, belief, and behavior can be experienced, explained, and shared.” In order to communicate with each other, not only humans but also many animals and even plant species use a language. In the meantime, human language is unique in being symbolic communication system that is learned instead of biological inherited.
Communication within the group is based on systematic, conventionally used signs, sounds, gestures, or marks. As human language is being learned as a symbolic communication system, it is flexible. For example, meanings of words can be changed, as well as, new symbols may be created. Therefore, in modern language, new words are invented daily and the meaning of old ones changed. For example, the slang words used by our parents were very likely different from those that society use today.
Claire Kramsch and H.G. Widdowson in their book “Language and Culture” reveal that through language people show their attitudes, beliefs, point of view, as well as, they create experience. …
