“1984” and “BNW” depict societies in which freedom is a crime and curiosity has been replaced by fear. Technology in both societies is used as a mean of control, such as human factories or telescreens that watch every move you do. Even though these books were written on the 20th century they describe the societies of the future present. We can see how we depend on technologies and how information is bombarded through all our devices.
Finally, “BNW” is, in my opinion, a less horrifying than “1984”. I think there are some tiny pockets of escape. There are the “reservations”, where primitives live and practice a quite different lifestyle; there are also islands to which awkward members of society can be sent if necessary. As for me, “Brave New World” is more enjoyable for reading, mostly because it is not completely devoid of hope. However, “1984” portrays a world in which there is no hope.
